COTA For Jessica Cross
The Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA) helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fund raising assistance and family support.
Description:
We are an Olympia, Washington, campaign raising money through COTA for the Cross family. 3 year old Jessica Cross needs a life-saving kidney transplant. The Cross family has asked COTA for assistance in raising a goal amount of $55,000 towards transplant-related expenses. Jessica Cross was diagnosed with failure to thrive shortly after birth, the first of many diagnosis. At about 2 months of age she was diagnosed with both congestive heart failure and kidney failure. At just 7 months old she had open heart surgery and also had her left kidney removed at 9 1/2 months old! Her official diagnosis relating to kidney disease is chronic kidney disease, chronic renal insufficiency, real dysplaysia, and hypoplaysia (small kidneys). Although many can survive on only one kidney Jessica's is sick and she needs a transplant to allow her to grow and be healthier.
History:
Children's Organ Transplant Association is a non-profit national charity dedicated to helping families with their transplant-related expenses and organizing communities to raise funds for COTA. It was established as a volunteer organization in Bloomington, Indiana, in 1986 following the "Let David Live" fundraising drive to place 2 year old David McConnell on the liver transplant waiting list. A group of citizens raised more than $100,000 in two months, enabling David to be placed on the list. Sadly, David died while waiting for a donor liver. However, his courageous struggle inspired the group to organize what today is COTA.
