The Senior Companion Program supports qualified agencies and organizations for the dual purpose of: 1. Helping elderly and disabled adults remain living independently in their own homes longer than expected, delaying more expensive long term care, and 2. Engaging persons 55 and older, with limited income in volunteer service to meet critical community needs which provides a high quality experience, enriching the volunteers lives.

History:
Senior Companions of South Dakota is affiliated with the national Senior Companion Program, which is part of the National Senior Service Corps funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Approximately, 64% of funding is through this federal grant. Other funding comes from nine United Ways, a grant from the state of South Dakota, city and county governments and private contributions. The Senior Companions of South Dakota started in Sioux Falls in September of 1978 when the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society received a CNCS grant. The Good Samaritan Society continues to be the program's sponsor.
