SIOUXLAND RSVP
The SIOUXLAND Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is an organization of retired and semi-retired men and women aged 55 and over who have chosen to include volunteerism as a part of their retirement activities. RSVP provides meaningful volunteer opportunities for these persons, enabling them to make a difference in their community. In addition to providing needed volunteer community support, RSVP seeks to offer seniors continued opportunities for growth, education, socialization and community improvement.
Description:
The SIOUXLAND RSVP is characterized by its ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of a three county area and to draw upon the expertise of our community’s senior resources to meet the challenges. RSVP matches the personal interests and skills of older Americans with opportunities to help solve community problems through schools, day care centers, police departments, hospitals and other nonprofit and public organizations. RSVP offers maxim flexibility and choices in the areas of time, commitment and job. RSVP volunteers are covered by supplemental insurance while on duty, and receive pre-service orientation. Non-driving residents of Sioux Falls receive free transportation to and from their volunteer job sites. The SIOUXLAND RSVP is designed so there is no dollar cost to volunteers. No fees or dues are required. All volunteers must be age 55+.
History:
The concept of organizing senior citizens to do volunteer work was established in 1971 through the Older Americans Act. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) was established in Sioux Falls in 1974. The RSVP programs nationwide are presently under the umbrella of the Corporation for National Service. Local sponsorship of the project is provided by the Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society. In January 2000 the Minnehaha County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program merged with the Lincoln County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program to become the SIOUXLAND Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and provides volunteer services to the counties of Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, and Union.
