The mission of the South Dakota Cooperative Extension
Service is to serve the people through an educational process that helps them improve their lives by applying unbiased, scientific knowledge focused on issues and needs. Educational programs are conducted in Agriculture, Family & Consumer Sciences, and 4-H and
Youth Development.

Description:
The Cooperative Extension Service provides informal,
educational youth development programming and collaboration with school and community agencies to help youth become self-reliant and productive members of society. The Extension Service provides programs and services from three levels - federal (USDA), state(SDSU), and county (Minnehaha). 4-H is a youth development program that teaches life skills. 4-H uses
a variety of delivery methods such as clubs, special interest groups, activities, camps, enrichment programs and individual participation. 4-H is a family-centerd program. Membership is open to all youth ages 8-19 years of age. Cloverbuds is open to all children ages 5-7 years of age. Members are involved in over 50 projects from aerospace to zoology through a "hands on" learning approach. The 4-H program is carried out by salaried Extension staff, volunteers, teen leaders, and members. There are 30 clubs in and around Minnehaha County.

History:
4-H has been green and growing for over 100 years in the United States. After a century of inclusion and collaboration, 4-H spans the nation from family farms to urban environments. 4-H brings together youth and adults. 4-H is still rooted in the historic base of rural America but, to the surprise of many, over 50%
of the membership nation wide are in urban suburbs and centers. 4-H builds confident, capable, positive and
caring citizens.
