Money raised by Sioux Empire United Way makes a difference in the lives of people right here at home because money that is raised locally stays local. Donations are distributed to local agencies who use the funds to combat many of the toughest problems facing thousands of people living and working in the Sioux Empire.

History:
Sioux Empire United Way is a non-profit organization formed by the citizens of the Sioux Empire community to carry out the functions of fundraising and allocating funds to achieve community impact.

It began in 1929 with the formation of the Sioux Falls Community Chest which included 12 agencies. The purpose of this organization was primarily to combine the annual fundraising appeals of these agencies into a single campaign and allocate the funds. In the first Community Chest campaign, $41,622 was raised.

In 1954, the Community Chest evolved into the Sioux Falls United Fund and merged the original 12 member agencies with the YMCA, YWCA, American Red Cross and five other agencies. The first United Fund Campaign raised $171,755. The name United Community Services was adopted in 1960. The current name of Sioux Empire United Way, Inc., was adopted at the corporate annual meeting held in February of 1971.

Our United Way is successful because of each person, firm, company, organization and donor making a contribution. Agencies meeting qualification requirements as established in Sioux Empire United Way's By-Laws and Policies and Procedures may become affiliated upon an affirmative vote of the Board of Directors.

Sioux Empire United Way is a member of United Way of America, Inc., which is an organization that provides numerous services to local United Ways including program information, computer software support, direction on national issues, training courses, campaign data and marketing information. Raising and allocating funds are the responsibility of our local board of Directors.
