Girls On The Run
Logo

Girls on the Run of Sioux Falls is a life changing, nonprofit prevention program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. Our mission is "to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self respect and healthy living."

Description:
Girls on the Run combines training for a non-competitive 5k walk/run event with lessons, games, activities, and workouts. Our programs instill self esteem through health education, life skills development, mentoring relationships, and physical training -- all of which are accomplished through an active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, staff, and the community.

Our goal is to EMPOWER all girls to…

  • have a strong sense of identity
  • give and receive support from a group
  • stand up for themselves in a healthy manner
  • have a healthy body image
  • understand their importance in the community
  • complete a 5K run/walk event

Our objective is to reduce the potential development of at-risk activities among participants in Girls on the Run. By encouraging body image satisfaction, we strive to reduce eating disorders, depression, suicide, substance and alcohol abuse problems and confrontations with the juvenile justice system.

History:
This program was established at the Sioux Falls YWCA in 2004 and has had over 900 young female participants.
