Our mission is to provide community-based work, residential and support services to young people and adults with physical or mental developmental disabilities.

Description:
They say that eyes are windows to the soul. When we look into our individuals eyes, we see an extraordinary vision-a vision of a community that actively includes people of all abilities. DakotAbilites provides homes and apartments in Sioux Falls for people with disabilities, including supervised apartment living and group living arrangements. We also provide on-site support services and assistance, such as 24-hour nursing care.
Our goal is to meet the needs of both persons with disabilities and local employers. We help our individuals find jobs suited to their skills and abilities. These services include: skills assessment, job coaching, job placement, and work adjustment training.
DakotAbilities coordinates medical services to provide treatments such as physical and occupational therapy, in the most convenient, cost-effective setting. We also offer alternative services, which include activities for people who are unable to or don't choose to work. We create adaptive equipment to help individuals with disabilities become more functinal-at home, on the job, and in society.

History:
DakotAbilites began providing day services in June 1975 as United Cerbral Palsy (UCP) in Sioux Falls. There were five adult individuals who meet at the VFW Post 628. One year later, the first group home was opened and DakotAbilites began providing residential services. In 1990, UCP was changed to Community Disabilities Services (CDS). In July of 1996, CDS changed its name to DakotAbilites and continues to provide services under this name today. DakotAbilities provides services to 112 individuals with developmental disabilities. We now have seven group homes, twenty-five supervised apartments, and three locations where people live in their own homes.
