Families In Transition (FIT)
To provide safe affordable housing and comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect.
Description:
FIT’s seven residential buildings in Manchester and two in Concord have the capacity to house 135 individuals/families on any given night. In addition, FIT provides space for a health care clinic in Manchester with is staffed by medical professionals from the Mobile Community Health Team. The clinic is open to FIT participants and any homeless individuals. Both locations have rooms designated for our children’s programs.
FIT also operates two Family Outfitters Thrift Stores, a social entrepreneurship that serves as an alternative revenue stream for FIT as well as an Employment & Training Program where participants can work on pre vocational, career and computer skills, ultimately leading to paid employment in the store or else where.
History:
Families in Transition (FIT) began as a program of the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund in 1991 with one apartment building and the capacity to provide transitional housing and supportive services to 5 women and their children. FIT incorporated into a non-profit agency governed by a Board of Directors in 1995. The organization has since grown into an agency that, in 2007 assisted 261 individuals and 136 children. All of these people were homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
