About the Volunteer New Jersey Partnership

 History

New Jersey is a small state, geographically; yet it is home to nearly 9 million potential volunteers. Volunteer New Jersey is a partnership between the Association of New Jersey Volunteer Centers  and the State of New Jersey Governor’s Office of Volunteerism (housed under the Secretary of State’s Office).

Our goals are to provide:

~ every resident in New Jersey with immediate access to information about community needs where they work, where they live or anywhere in between

~ every not-for-profit organization in the State with a place to register their volunteer needs.

 The Volunteer New Jersey Partnership’s initial venture is to create a statewide web-based volunteer database, specifically geared to address and meet the needs of all New Jersey communities.  The database, housed in this site, will serve as New Jersey’s virtual volunteer center, capable of connecting volunteers looking for volunteer opportunities with charities in need of volunteer assistance.

Goal

Build the capacity of volunteer programs and their leadership by addressing the four priority needs identified by NJ’s volunteer sector:
1) professional development/training volunteer administrators,
2) increased sustainability and capacity to meet local needs,
3) increased engagement of citizens as volunteers and
4) technical assistance for and coordination among volunteer programs.

Major Activities

The partnership’s inaugural venture was creation of a one-stop internet resource for volunteers and program staff.

• Volunteer programs can recruit new volunteers, let donors know what goods or services they need, and reach potential board members.
• Program staff can access online training and explore resources for improving program operation.
• Citizens can search for opportunities to volunteer that match their interests.

Excellence and Expertise

Promotes excellence in program operations and supports expertise among volunteer program staff through development of a statewide training system for volunteer program sponsors and administrators.

Peer-to-Peer Networks

Promotes development of regional, self-managed networks of staff responsible for community-based volunteer programs to foster sustainability, professional development, and cooperative work.

Volunteer Emergency Response Networks

Known in some regions as COADs, County Organizations Active in Disaster, this effort promotes understanding, respect, planning, and coordination between the traditional and non-traditional programs that mobilize in response to local emergencies.

About Senior Corps
(a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service)

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides service opportunities for those who want to make a difference in their communities while maintaining the flexibility to decide who and how frequently they serve.

Eligibility: RSVP volunteers must be at least 55 years of age.

Benefits: RSVP volunteers receive the following free benefits:

• Pre-service orientation;
• On-the-job training from the agency or organization where they are placed;
• Supplemental insurance while on duty.
