THE SALVATION ARMY - ELIZABETH TEMPLE CORPS
The Salvation Army's ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Description:
The Elizabeth Salvation Army provides various types of assistance and education. Emergency Shelter. We run an emergency shelter which is open to men, women and families and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We also run a feeding program, providing a full, hot lunch for the last ten days of every month. Feeding Program. In addition to the feeding program, we operate a food pantry in which people from the community can receive groceries once a month. Hispanic Women's Ministries. We provide a chance for women of the community to gather for education, crafts, group outings and every Tuesday evening (in Spanish) For the holiday season we offer the following programs: Back to School Program. In September we invite those in need to our center where we distribute new back packs complete with new school supplies for their children (up to age 13). Thanksgiving baskets which contain all of the ingredients necessary for a complete Thanksgiving dinner. Christmas Angel Tree: We invite community businesses to purchase new toys for children in Elizabeth and Linden to help parents provide a meaningful Christmas who would otherwise be unable to purchase gifts. Summer Camp. We give children the opportunity of spending a week at The Salvation Army's summer camp, Camp Tecumseh, in Pittstown, NJ. We offer summer camp scholarships to kids whose families are otherwise unable to pay for a week in the country for fun, learning and sunshine. Day camp. We also provide an entire month of day camp during the month of July. This consists of arts and crafts, field trips, and games and gives the parents the option of sending their children away for the daytime rather than away for the full week.
History:
The Salvation Army, an international movement, was founded in 1865 by General William Booth and his wife Mrs. Katherine Booth in London England. It began when General William Booth recognized the needs of the poverty stricken in the East End of London. Several young adults brought the Salvation Army across the ocean to New York City at the end of the 19th century. Since then, it has flourished and continues seeking innovative ways to reach out to the less fortunate in an attempt to help them to help themselves.
