Matheny Medical and Educational Center is a special hospital for children and adults with multiple developmental disabilities...a special education school providing an integrated experience for students with a diverse range of disabilities...a comprehensive outpatient center designed to meet the healthcare needs of people with all types of disabilities... and a teaching hospital developing new ways to train healthcare professionals to work effectively and appropriately with the disabled population.

Description:
Matheny Medical and Educational Center is home to 101 children and adults with developmental disabilities. An additional 30 adults reside in group homes in the community. Nearly one third of the students in the Matheny School are non-residential day students, referred by local school districts not equipped to handle their special needs. The Matheny Center of Medicine, our outpatient clinic, provides services to more than 900 patients and our Arts Access Program makes it possible for children and adults with disabilities to create fine art.

History:
The Matheny School was started in 1946 by Walter and Marguerite Matheny to provide services for their son, Chuck, who was born with cerebral palsy. Their vision of making it possible for disabled children to lead full, satisfying lives is the foundation for Matheny's mission of optimizing the quality of life for our disabled individuals.
