Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 9, 2009

The New Jersey State Museum is a vital cultural resource in New Jersey and throughout the region. The New Jersey State Museum is four museums in one: Archaeology/Ethnology, Cultural History; Fine Art; and Natural History with a Planetarium. The Museum thrives on the important work of volunteers. As we revitalize the Museum’s volunteer corps, we hope to find enthusiastic, dedicated volunteers to serve as Museum Educators, Gallery Volunteers & Exhibit Docents.

Museum Educators:
Museum Educators will work closely with school groups that visit the Museum. Museum Educators will provide guided tours of the Museum’s exhibits and be able to point-out elements that would be of interest to school-age children; tours will be followed by a hands-on classroom experience. Ideally, Museum Educators should either have a background, be studying, or have a degree in early childhood education (K-12) as well as a comfort level with speaking to groups of 20 to 30 children and leading object-based classroom exercises. Exhibit-specific and classroom training will be provided by the Museum’s professionals (ideally 4 to 6 hours, 2 to 3 times a week – mostly “on your feet” work).

Gallery Greeters:
Gallery Volunteers are an important part of the New Jersey State Museum. Gallery Volunteers serve to welcome the public to the Museum and provide basic information such as the location of specific exhibits, public restrooms, hour of operation, etc. Gallery Volunteers will be stationed at the front doors and throughout the Museum – sometimes within galleries or covering a particular area of an exhibit. If a Gallery Volunteer is stationed with a gallery, exhibition-specific training will be provided (ideally 16 to 40 hours per week – mostly “on your feet” work).

Exhibit Docents:
The New Jersey State Museum is looking to re-establish its Docent Corps. Docents will receive exhibit specific training so that they will be comfortable talking with the general public about an exhibit or a particular aspect of the exhibit. Depending on the number of available Docents and the size of the Museum’s exhibit, docents may be asked to interpret an entire exhibit or sections of the exhibit. Docents will be expected to provide a level of information that is more detailed than the printed materials–often providing information that “brings to life a particular object or exhibit. Docents should be comfortable speaking to small groups of 10 to 15 visitors (ideally 4 to 6 hours, 2 to 3 times a week – mostly “on your feet” work).
