Adopt A Stream Foundation

The Adopt A Stream Foundation's (AASF) mission is to teach people how to become stewards of their watersheds.

Description:
That mission is carried out by producing environmental education materials, conducting "Streamkeeper Academy" classes for all ages, and providing local communities with stream and wetland restoration technical assistance. To increase its mission capacity, AASF is developing the NW Stream Center - the first regional environmental education facility in the Pacific NW with stream and wetland ecology & fish and wildlife habitat restoration as its central themes.

History:
AASF was founded in Snohomish County in 1985. Since then, AASF has conducted numerous natural resource conferences and produced environmental education materials that are in use across the U.S. and Canada (our most popular book is the "Streamkeepers Field Guide: Watershed Inventory and Stream Monitoring Methods"... and we produced the "Streamkeeper" video starring Bill Nye The Science Guy."

Twenty-six adjunct professors teach "Streamkeeper Adcademy" classes with AASF staff. AASF Director Tom Murdoch often tells audiences that by attending "You can get a PHd's worth of natural resource science at a very low costs, no pressure to do a thesis, and have a lot of fun along the way!" Classes are conducted on the habits and habitat requirements of most fish and wildlife that are found in the NW. All classes are accredited by the Washington Science Teachers Association and several are accredited by Western Washington University.

One of the more visible aspects of AASF is that it has a team of ecologists and technicians that provide local communities assistance removing barriers to fish migration, restoring stream banks, and creating fish and wildlife habitat. Over the years, AASF has constructed fish ladders, stabilized stream banks, created salmon spawning and rearing habitat, replaced fish barriers with bridges and three restored three wetlands throughout Snohomish County. Come to the NW Stream Center and you will see three acres of wetlands that were restored from a parking lot that used to be a wetland.

AASF is proud to have taught volunteers how to become Streamkeepers in WA, OR, ID, CA, NV, MT, and British Columbia. That program began in Snohomish County.
